The Old Character
A touch of molasses sets this higher-proofed grandson to the classic and timeless Old Fashioned apart.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Kentucky Grit Corn Whiskey Aged 6 Months
- ½ oz Sorghum Molasses
- 2-3 dashes Aromatic Bitters
- Cocktail Cherry & Orange Twist (for garnish)
Instructions
- Add Whiskey, Molasses, and Bitters to an ice-filled cocktail shaker.
- Cap the tin and shake vigorously until frost begins to form on the outside, about 15 seconds.
- Strain over a large ice sphere or cube into a chilled rocks glass. (Standard ice works just as well.)
- Gently twist an orange peel over glass to express oil, then place in glass.
- Garnish with cocktail cherry and serve.
Variation: Substitute Brown Sugar Syrup* for the Molasses.
*Brown Sugar (Demerara) Syrup Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup brown or demerara sugar (such as Sugar In The Raw)
Instructions
- Combine water and sugar in a microwave-safe container.
- Microwave on high until mixture just starts to boil—about 3 minutes.
- Remove and stir to fully dissolve. If needed, microwave in 30 second increments until incorporated.
- Let mixture sit until cool before transferring to a sealable container.
- Store refrigerated for up to 3 weeks.
